Monsieur de Montardent

Ernest could have added seeing a movie to his list of “firsts.” This time he didn’t have to be asked to write an essay. He wanted to commit this adventure to paper. After all he wouldn’t be able to tell his grandmother about it without also telling her about how he had been thrown out of school. He believed what Monsieur de Montardent had said when he had arrived home. “Don’t worry. It’s not worth troubling your grandmother. I’ll fix everything on Wednesday morning.”

So with peace of mind, Ernest wrote about the movie:

Victoria paid for two tickets at the entrance. We walked into a dark room where the only light came from a huge screen. I was a little nervous, especially since the volume was turned up loud, and the scenes looked violent.

“It’s just the previews,” said Victoria. We were practically the only people there in the middle of the afternoon, and we sank into the comfortable seats. I was thinking about what had happened that morning. I checked to make sure that my book was nice and dry in my bag, and I was so comfortable that I was almost ready to fall asleep when the movie began. Then, suddenly, everything else left my head. I was completely captivated by what I saw before my eyes. I escaped from my own life, and it felt great. When it was all over, I stumbled a little coming out of the theater as I realized that the school day was over, and that this ordinary Tuesday would continue on its way as I would on mine. But I secretly hoped it would never catch up with me.
